stick divination works with real albeit invisible spirits (see heading different realities). this often involves the spirits of family members and ancestors. however there are also the personal guardian spirit of a person (guardian angle), the spirit of the mountains, of water, earth and the nature.
spirits have their own life. they may be prepared to offer their help and services. some of them are seeking human company because they lack a physical body and require the support of a human being in order to become active in the material world. this is just the opposite of persons who are in need of spiritual beings, which are not confined to limitations of objects in the physical world and have access to information from other places and times. sometimes they ask for gifts in return for their services. this can lead to certain prescriptions for the client.
the diviner has a spirit who works as his or her personal aid (kontomblé). it is this spirit who guides the stick during the divination. the kontomblé communicates through the diviner with a client. the diviner serves then not only the client but also his kontomblé. in a way the opinion of the diviner is of no importance. however the kontomblé has in turn aiding spirits. it is those who carry out the bulk of the work for a client if certain rituals have been prescribed.
